International Compost Awareness Week 2026
3–9 May 2026
International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW) is a global campaign that highlights the importance of composting and the vital role it plays in creating healthy soils, reducing waste and tackling climate change.
This year’s theme, “Compost! Feed the Soil that Feeds Us”, focuses on how composting food and garden waste returns valuable nutrients to the soil, helping to grow food, support nature and reduce the amount of waste sent for disposal.
Composting helps to:
- reduce food and garden waste
- cut greenhouse gas emissions
- improve soil health and biodiversity
- turn everyday waste into a useful resource
You don’t need to be a gardening expert to get involved — whether you compost at home, use your council food waste service or support local composting projects, every action makes a difference.
Take action during ICAW:
- Use your food waste collection service
- Start home composting
- Find out what can and can’t be composted
- Use compost in your garden or community green spaces
