Master composters
What is a Master Composter?
Master Composters are trained volunteers who promote home composting within their local community.
They encourage residents to start composting, support those who already compost, and help ensure people are getting the best results from their compost bins.
Our Master Composters come from a wide range of backgrounds, but they all share one thing in common - a passion for reducing waste and helping people compost successfully.

Why home composting matters
Home composting is one of the easiest and most effective ways to reduce household waste.
- A single home compost bin can divert around 150kg of waste per year from disposal.
- Composting reduces the amount of waste sent for treatment.
- It creates a free, nutrient-rich compost for your garden.
- It helps cut carbon emissions linked to transporting and processing waste.
By encouraging composting at home, Master Composters help reduce waste across Gloucestershire and support more sustainable communities.
What do Master Composters do?
Our volunteers:
- Attend community events and roadshows
- Support residents with composting advice and troubleshooting
- Work with schools and community groups
- Promote composting campaigns
- Signpost residents to compost demonstrations and local schemes
They are often the first point of contact for anyone interested in learning more about composting at home.
The wider impact
Master Composter programmes operate in partnership with local authorities and waste service providers.
Across the UK, these programmes have:
- Delivered thousands of volunteer hours
- Supported the sale and uptake of compost bins
