Top tips for composting
Here are a few tips to help you grow your own compost.
- Your compost bin should contain the right mix of 'green's and 'browns', about a 50:50 ratio.
- Your compost bin should ideally be placed in a partially sunny spot to help speed up the process.
- It should be in an area that is well drained to allow water to drain out.
- Place your bin on soil so that worms can get in and help break down the contents.
- Invest in a kitchen caddy, or use an old plastic tub, to put your food leftovers in, this will make it easier to transport kitchen waste to your compost bin in the garden.
- If your compost starts to give off an offensive odour, give it a turn, as odour can be a sign of a lack of aeration.
- You can store your kitchen scraps in your freezer to speed up decomposition. Your materials will break down at the cell level when frozen.
- Chop up your bin contents as fine as you can before including them. Smaller pieces mean quicker decomposition.
